"It's OAT-freaking-MEAL!" Marco exploded.

I'm going to come right out and say that I've always liked this book, mostly for the randomness that is Instant Maple and Ginger oatmeal. Has anyone ever found any at the grocery store, though? I remember looking for it after reading this book, and the closest I could find was Maple and Brown Sugar flavored.

Other questions: What do you think happened with George Edelman and the other Controllers with oatmeal-addicted Yeerks trapped in their heads after the war? Have you ever ordered a Happy Meal with extra Happy?

And on a more serious note, on what side do you fall on the should they/shouldn't they use the oatmeal against the Yeerks? Personally, I say the Yeerks brought it on themselves, so I had no problems with it going directly into the Yeerk pool, but I can also understand the argument against, considering it dooms the hosts to be Controllers forever, and we don't exactly know how much it takes or if the Yeerks in the pool would be able to get inside of hosts or not. I wish they could've focused on the voluntary Controllers, because in that case, I figure those who continued to be willing hosts after they realized what was happening are asking for it. Thoughts?

So, given that maple-ginger instant oatmeal isn't really a thing, but, well, ginger's pretty tasty, I decided to try to make some. Here's the recipe I came up with:

1/2 cup plain instant oatmeal
2 tbsp chopped cryztallized ginger
dash ground cardamom
dash cinnamon
2 tbsp real maple syrup

Add milk and microwave for about a minute, or add hot water (but milk blends better with the spiciness of the ginger, I think). It turned out pretty good!

Crystallized ginger varies in how strong it is depending on where you get it -- the stuff I used was from Whole Foods and was pretty spicy, but if you're using a milder one you might want to add a dash of ground ginger too.

Rachel, the other Animorphs, and Ax have discovered a new super weapon against the Yeerks. It's easy to get. It's lightweight. It's instant oatmeal. It doesn't actually destroy the aliens, but its effect on them is so powerful that the kids know they have to try to use it. To help slow down the invasion. It means another trip down to the Yeerk pool. And the possibility of not being able to get back up to the surface.

This is another one of those definate moral compromise ones...yes, the oatmeal would help the hosts but not free them ever. Reguardless of what the TV episode had (the guy got a different Yeerk there). I can see why Jake didn't want to slip it to Tom.

However I could also see some hosts thinking some freedom even with a crazed alien in their heads would be better than total slavery if they couldn't be totally free.

Love Marco going on about no major conflict ever involving oatmeal. And of course the famous "it's OAT freaking MEAL!" quote.

Someone said before I think that the Visser should have just closed Alloran's hooves against the oatmeal...do we know if Andalites can do that?

I like how Rachel broke in and helped the guy in the end. And I wind up thinking about the end of the series when I read the part about Rachel's mom talking about the Yeerks. She never thought the guy was telling the truth until then.

The group uses their morphing powers for personal reasons again when they visit the opening of a Hard Rock Cafe. They rescue a suicidal man (but Arnold gets all the credit) and from the incident discover a Yeerk weakness: Instant maple and ginger oatmeal.

I fully expect the oatmeal icon to come out, whoever has it. That quote is classic. "IT'S OAT FREAKING MEAL!" And of course the ever funny 'Happy Meal with extra happy". I wanted to say that badly when my aunt got us McDonald's Friday lol. Also funny is I think it's Marco talking about oatmeal never being used in famous battles. And this exchange
Rachel: Marco!
Marco: No, some other gorilla

Another interesting part is Rachel talking about her nightmares. Creepy.

I can see more of the moral compromises here, they know the oatmeal may cause problems for the hosts if their Yeerks go insane but decide it's worth it to help the cause.

The KASU page has a couple comments about this one...why Visser Three didn't just close his host's hooves for one and the apparent mentioning of a Hard Rock Cafe already in the area some books before.

By the way...has ANYONE ever heard of maple and ginger flavor? I only know of maple and brown sugar.

hmm, questions...what would you decide in Jake's position? Would you go for it or decide it wasn't right enough? I also have to wonder how many of us would have just shot that barrel anyway after Visser Three released the others.

Prompts, anyone? I wish I knew why I stink at this part so often :(

Next week is The Decision, #18, after which I believe we take a break for Megamorphs 2.

Remember the rules, start out on topic even if you don't stay there, but don't be afraid to wander either, only current and previous books, don't delete unless you want to edit...*thinks* and play nice :) Which we all do.
