Sorry I didn't get this notice up here earlier (life has been hectic), but for those in the DC area or who are willing to make a day-trip, Katherine Applegate will be speaking and signing books at this year's National Book Festival on the National Mall on Saturday, September 21 (her husband came to this event last year)! Here are the deets:

Presentation in the Children Pavillion: 11:20 am - 11:50 am

Book Signing: 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
(sadly the Children Pavillion is on the opposite end on the Mall from the presentation)

More info about the festival here.

Anyone from here planning on coming? I will be there, trying to negotiate line placeholding, lol (effing Festival scheduling Margaret Atwood at the same time!). I was so disappointed it was just Michael Grant there last year, but now I can get the second signature on the same books! ;)

How cool is that? Does anyone else feel weirdly validated but also wrong for feeling that way for some reason?

Also has anyone else read The One and Only Ivan? What did you guys think?

This is a follow-up post to my previous one announcing Michael Grant's appearance at the National Book Festival in DC this upcoming Sunday. I know that he helped write the Animorphs series, but does anyone know if there's anything out there about which books he might have more specifically helped to write or create within the series? (I'm assuming all the KA ones only for starters). Same with Everworld.

I'm just trying to figure out which ones to bring for him to sign....

So I just noticed that Michael Grant is going to be at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC on September 23! His presentation is 1:50 pm - 2:35 pm, and his signing is unfortunately right afterwards at 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm (usually you have to line up a bit in advance to get a good place in line/even get a signature before time is up)...any other Washingtonians on here thinking of seeing him then? Impromptu DC Animorphs meet-up?

You guys, I just met Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant and they were both so delightful!

I'm a librarian and I'm attending this conference for children's & youth librarians, and Katherine Applegate is one of the keynote speakers. Which, obviously, I've been super excited about ever since I got permission from my boss to register for this.

Her speech was so lovely--she talked a lot about how people make connections, and how librarians connect books with readers and authors connect readers with ideas, etc. And she talked a lot about The One and Only Ivan and made basically everyone cry.

Then afterward there was a signing, and I was one of the first people in line. I had a copy of Ivan to get signed for myself and a copy of the reissued Animorphs #1 for my friend Keith (who some of you might know? He used to be one of the people who ran morphz.com like 100 years ago?) Anyway so I handed over my books with their post-its and was basically word-vomiting about how I met Keith because of Animorphs and so great blah blah blah and she was very nice and said how old it made her feel that people who read Animorphs as kids are now actual grownups, which is, in fact, pretty weird.

Then I walked away from the signing table, and looked down at my books... and she'd signed it "To Keith, Morph On! Keith."

Hello my lovely Ani-people,

I've just created [livejournal.com profile] kamg_weekly_100, a drabble comm for works by Michael Grant and K.A. Applegate. One prompt will be posted per week; the next post will be up Friday 24 August AEST. Come and join, and recruit all your LJ friends who aren't in this comm! :)

(ETA in case people are confused by the name - it's not an RPF comm. :D)

Eve and Adam

It's so exciting to see both of those names on there (rather than "K.A. Applegate").

Discuss!

This popped up in an e-mail from Amazon this morning--did y'all know KAA is putting out another book?

"The One and Only Ivan: My Story

"Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope."
