"What are we gonna do, run an ad in the newspaper? 'Help Wanted: danger, nightmares, big-time creepiness, no pay? Have you ever wanted to turn into a bug and fight brain-stealing aliens? Well, call 1-800-Animorph.' "

Obviously, this is an important book for the Animorphs, since it kicks off the David trilogy. We get the morphing cube back, which will have a huge impact on the books that come much later. For the first time, we get a new Animorph. We find out that one of the world leaders in the G8 is a Yeerk. It's a lot. I'm trying hard to remember my thoughts the first time I read this, because of course with hindsight, we all know that Ax and Marco are right to not want to add David to the Animorphs. I do remember being really excited about getting a new Animorph, though I was also disappointed that it wasn't going to be a girl.

So, questions for everyone: does anyone think David planned to leave and/or betray the Animorphs right away, or was it a result of something else? Should they have thought through the morphs they had David initially acquire (like maybe no golden eagle, given how it could take out their other bird morphs)? Did everyone enjoy the "Earthling, your son ditched school" line from Marco as much as I did? Can anyone play Clue without thinking of a partially-knocked out Tobias? Has anyone tried to figure out exactly which Marriott Hotel on the coast the G8 leaders were meeting at?

A kid named David has found the blue box Elfangor used to create the Animorphs. Now he knows the secret, and will do anything to become the most powerful Animorph of all.

Now we have the first portion of the three part David trilogy. I think it was a good idea, showing that not everyone who found out about the Yeerk threat and became an Animorph would be able to handle it as well as the original team. I'll try to focus on a segment at a time but it might not be easy.

With this one, we already see that he didn't want to listen to Jake or follow any orders, he wanted to do things his own way. My main issue with that would be disorganization, it would render the group less effective if everyone simply did their own thing and didn't coordinate themselves.

Was it simply the loss of his family that made David unstable? Or was there more to it do you think?

Was there a way David could have been saved at this point and trouble averted, or was he doomed from the start?

What do you think of his attitude toward Jake being the boss...he was sort of like "who put you in charge?" the whole time. I would say Jake's knowing more would be a good reason to listen to him though.

Summary

The blue box Elfangor used to create the Animorphs has been found by a kid named David. David has no idea what he has – or what it can do. But Marco does. And when he sees David with it, he knows the Animorphs have to get that box. At any cost.

But what should have been a simple plan ends up going horribly wrong. And David is on the run with the Animorphs and Ax. Now they have only two choices: turn David over to the Yeerks. Or make him the sixth Animorph…

PART ONE OF A TRILOGY

Prompt:
A Difficult Choice

Questions:

- It doesn’t get touched on after this, but David said “I found it…in a hole in a wall…like it had been put there or something.” Ellimist at work or KASU? Do you think he’s got more of a role in the books than just the times we see him? Or was it a freak accident like Ax suggested?

- The summit meeting is to discuss ‘all the problems in the Middle East’ but after Erik offers this tidbit, all attention is paid to Yeerk angle, obviously. Do you think ‘real world’ issues like (whatever the hell was going on 10 years ago) were generally left out of the series because they were books? Because OMG YEERKS? Do you think current issues had any place in the story, would have made it better/worse, or should the kids have gone on focusing on the aliens and kicking ass like they did?

- First impression of David? Of David’s family? Of David’s reaction to…everything? (Just in this book.)

- In the vote to make David an Animorph, it was Marco and Ax against, Jake, Tobias, Cassie and Rachel for it. Do you think this is telling about their characters? Using the arguments and situation in the book (okay, we all know how it ends, pretend we don’t!) how would you have voted?

- Finally! Someone used a gun on the alien bastards!

I’m sorry I’ve been absent so long, but [livejournal.com profile] buffyangellvr23 has been doing a great job picking up the slack, and props to her. You are awesome, honey.
