Hi, there. I've been lurking for a while and figured it was high time I joined. So here's my requisite introduction post.
It was 1996, I was ten years old, and I saw the first book at a local bookstore. The cover drew me to it like a magnet draws iron filings. I'm not sure why this was; most likely it was because of the image of a kid changing into an animal. It made me go, "Wow, what's that about?" I've always been a voracious reader but had never been interested in a series before. The premise sounded really cool, though, so I decided to give it a try.
I never looked back. Reading The Invasion was the start of my first fandom ever. The books prompted me to write my first fanfiction, to draw my firsts fanart, and to develop my first crush on a character. (Who happened to be Ax. Man, I had it bad for him.) I was enthralled. I nearly lost my little mind when I saw the trailer for the T.V. show on Nickelodeon. It sounded too good to be true. Which, as it turned out, was exactly the case, but that didn't stop me from taping all of the episodes. I guess it proves that obsession can blind you to even the most horrendous levels of cheesiness.
The final book left me with mixed feelings, not because of what happened, but because of what it represented. On one hand, after literally years of following these characters, I knew at last how the war they had been fighting for so long ended. On the other, this huge part of my childhood was over: no more books to look forward to. Of course, that meant I had to start reading the whole thing over again.
And I never really stopped reading the books. I still come back and reread ones that I particularly like, or the series as a whole. Getting a little older has also given me a new perspective on them. In the early ones, especially, I see little touches of who each of the Animorphs grows to be. I can't think of a character I could label as my very favorite, although I'm partial to Ax and Marco. I love Jake, Rachel, Tobias, and Cassie, too, but Ax and Marco tend to make me laugh more. Out of the regular cast there's not really anyone I dislike. Cassie grates on me at some points, though. The one character I genuinely hate is Estrid, but that's another rant altogether.
As for specifics: I'm an Alloran fangirl. My One True Pairing is Elfangor/Loren. My other OTP is Tobias/Ax (before The Pretender. That book crushed my fragile hopes for the pairing in the worst way). My other OTP is Rachel/Tobias. And my other other OTP is Marco/Ax (after The Pretender, because I had to console myself). I secretly think Infested!Alloran/Ax would make a great angst pairing. (Although technically it'd be a threesome: Esplin 9466/Alloran/Ax. Oh, yes.)
I'm over at the drabble community animorphs100, too, so please check it out if you're so inclined. I also post the occasional rant or drabble in my journal.
And so this post isn't all introduction filler, a couple of discussion topics:
- In Visser, it's learned that Edriss has a daughter, Madra. Is it possible that she and Marco ever meet? If so, would they learn who the other was? What effect might it have?
- The whole series is put into motion because of five kids taking a shortcut. In fairy tales, the shortcut is often associated with danger. Taking one can, however, cause the protagonist to overcome an obstacle or experience personal growth. He or she steps back onto the road a little wiser or as a slightly different person. Thus, transformation, too, can play a major role. What themes or features reflecting this do you see in the series? How do you think the idea of literal and figurative transformation is explored?

Date: 2006-07-09 05:05 am (UTC)felinephoenix, that premise sounds absolutely nifty. Since, y'know, Marco made it clear that he he would show Edriss no mercy and knew she had infested his mom. But Madra wouldn't know that about Allison, and we never learn her feelings about her mother. I can't remember if Marco finds out about Edriss's children in Visser. Maybe Eva would tell him? I can definitely see how Marco might take on a sibling role for Madra. If you write it, I'd really like to read it. And huzzah for having OTPs in common!
