Yeah. You don't fly directly from Sydney to, say, Chicago either--you land on the edge of the country by the ocean and transfer. The only thing I can think is that the Yeerks somehow screwed up the flight instruments and the communications devices on the plane. But you'd think the pilots would still be able to get a visual on a FREAKING CITY.
