Confusion ensued

Who the heck was the old hawk who followed Jake around giving him well-timed instructions in number 41#, The Familiar? They established that it wasn't Tobias (as he was busy using Ax's body to simultaneously run an anti-Yeerk terrorist campaign and mess with Jake's head by pretending to be Elfangor. Good times). I guess it must be the newest member in the cast of quasi-omnipotent beings of the Animorphs 'verse. Did they ever explain what that thing was (he/she/it of "INTERESTING CHOICE. THEY BEAR MORE STUDY, THESE HUMANS")? Jake said it wasn't the Ellimist or Cryak or Drode. It's possible that they explained it in a later book, but I zoned out for most of the 40's because the ghost writing got so bad. Can anyone help me out here?
Speaking of ghostwriters, I was very surprised to learn that #25, which I think is bloody hilarious, was ghostwritten. If only they'd kept that guy, the whole ghostwriting thing wouldn't have been so bad at all. I'm going to copy the quote from a few posts down to demonstrate my point:
