Yeah....I definitely remember that. That was the first month I was completely adamant that my mom take me to the bookstore...nearly every day that month until it came out >.> (This isn't very spoiled...the bookstore was across the street from the grocery store)

I recall hyperventilation and panic after finishing the book. Fortunately, I read it after #22 had already come out, so my torment was not long drawn out.

Either I read 21 and 22 back to back or I knew instantly that he wasn't dead, because I have zero memories of being distraught. It was so long ago, I can't remember details. lol.

I know I didn't read them back to back, but I think even then, my knowledge of books/TV shows had developed to where "main characters don't get offhanded deaths like that, it's totally a fake out" and I wasn't that concerned about it.

Aka sorry, we can't kill of Tobias NOW because we need to kill another main character LATER and then Tobias won't be around to be SAD. :P

Well, finales always have different rules in regards to deaths, of course. :P

Though I do recall being surprised at the '...wait, that was IT?!'-ness of that ending at the time. Nowadays, I can appreciate that style of ending.

I don't think I had a problem either because I read into the third book before reading that one or because we had later books where I work and I knew he was still alive. I think the second...The Pretender is right after, and I'd have seen the cover.

I remember frantically reading the next book immediately after finishing this one. I don't even think I came up to breath. I was just like WHAT IS RACHEL GOING TO DO OMGOMG. Book 22 is still my favorite Animorphs book of all time.
