Character Discussion Rachel and Cassie

(*makes note to write list of what she's done so far so she doesn't forget any*) I liked how these two were so opposite of each other, yet they were still BFFs. The scenes with Rachel commenting about Cassie's clothes were good for a snicker or two.

Anyway, I know y'all will have more thoughts.

It was certainly sad how their friendship kind of deteriorated towards the end, but I did love it during most of the series, especially how Rachel kind of looked out for Cassie at school, and also nudged her where Jake was concerned--#29 especially had a lot of great moments! :)

Is #29 the one where he sees her in her swimsuit? That scene was gold. ^_^

I think so. That was easily the highlight of that book. In fact it may be the only thing keeping me from trying to forget that book even happened.

lol really? what do you have against 29?

Not sure that it's 29, but the bathing suit book is also the (first) Helmacron book. And I f'n hate the damn Helmacrons. Both times.

ohhhh okay I'm with you on the Helmacrons. I liked 29 though, that was Ax getting sick and Mr. Tidwell and Aftran etc.

AHHH okay. My bad. In that case 29 is actually one I need to reread. XD

Actually, I recently re-read 24 for the first time and found it (intentionally) hilarious, much to my surprise--the whole dead captains can't make mistakes logic, the nerdy Star Trek fan store clerk, the general insanity of the Helmacrons. It's not a typical Animorphs book, but if you read it almost as canon crack!fic, it's surprisingly enjoyable, I found.

No, the swimsuit is in The Suspicion, which is #24. The Sickness is #29. I can't be sure, but I assume that sherrilina is referring to the beginning of the book when another girl is considering asking Jake out and Rachel informs them that 1) he's dating Cassie, 2) they will be going to the dance together, and 3) then precedes to inform Jake that he will be taking Cassie. She doesn't exactly leave it up for debate. :P Which is a part that I personally like a lot.

Particularly love this line- "'You and my cousin make me want to hurl,' she said over her shoulder. 'Jake can face death every day, but he can't manage to ask a girl to a dance. And you're no better.'"

Also, this part- "'We are all going to the dance Thursday night'" Rachel informed Jake. 'And you are taking Cassie.'

Jake choked on his macaroni and beef. Marco started banging him on the back."

It's all pretty funny, but those are my favorite parts.

The swimsuit one was really great as well though.

"'He thinks I look dumpy,"' I muttered to Rachel under my breath.

'Cassie, you are so hopeless. What you know about guys could fit on the head of a pin. Good grief. That is not a 'she looks dumpy' look. That's a 'whoa, she looks hot, but I better not show any reaction or she'll get offended' look.'"

I love Jake choking on his macaroni and beef like that--for some reason, it completely cracks me up every damn time. :)

Not sure if this is the right place to post this...

I haven't yet reread the books, but... does anyone have thoughts on why/how they became friends in the first place? Was it ever explored or hinted at in canon? I know there are lots of examples IRL about friends who are complete opposites, but I was just intrigued. Anyone have any theories?

I love the way Applegrant explored their attitudes to violence/war. As early as #19 Marco makes some comment about how Cassie will stick by her ideals and leave the rest of them to die. I'm not sure of specific examples about Rachel, but even her bloodthirst isn't just there for the sake of it. It's not a glued-on character trait to make her "the violent Animorph". Rachel and Cassie's attitudes actually have repercussions on the whole group: they and the other Animorphs have to deal with them and work around them.
