For those who are interested, recently posted an article on the whitewashing of Marco's model in the new series, where they talk about the impact of the casting and quote a few of the responses to the recent petition.

I also sent an email to Scholastic about this recently - I have received a response, and while they haven't said whether they will be making any changes yet, they have said that they will look into it and give me a more detailed response later. Hopefully a good sign! (And if anyone else does want to contact Scholastic, please PM for details on how to do that)

Also of note, I got cited. Biznatches. *fistpump*

Anyway, this is really cool that news of this is getting picked up by non-Animorphs sites.

I'm going to assume you spoke/e-mailed with David Levithan? As someone who grew up in a Jewish household acceping of homosexuality (my uncle's had a partner foooorever), I was really struck by his book, WIDE AWAKE. He creates such a diverse cast of characters in all of his books, that perhaps bringing this up from a writerly POV (although his ed. in charge of the re-release) could be worthy of our time?

But IDK. I'm sure you've already contacted him.

Wow, I didn't even see the post they're mentioning about in the petition! I was keeping an eye on the new models and I was just thinking about what they were going to do about Ax (oh no, is he going to be pale pink instead of blue???). I saw that picture and I just snorted and said outloud- that's NOT Marco. The kid doesn't even have any of the other traits Marco has- straight, longer hair, a *tan* (sheesh, that kid's waaaay pale)... I dunno. It wasn't just the race issue, it just wasn't a great choice of cover model.

Honestly I don't think they will have a problem changing the model. Look how many times Jake and Rachel got changed (and it wasn't even that big of a change). I'm sure we'll see a different model within the next week or two.

Right, exactly. I wonder why they changed the Rachel/Jake models. I thought I read somewhere that it was due to the fan's opinions on it, but I'm not sure. In a way though, while I feel that Rachel's new model is more accurate to her character, I'm pretty sure they changed it from the original because the original wasn't skinny enough :(

Marco didn't have a tan, he had darker skin. A tan is a cosmetic thing and is not the same as being a minority.

Well, I was being more sardonic (a word I learned from Marco!) than exactly accurate there. My actual point was that it just wasn't a good model for Marco, like, at all. In any stretch of the imagination!

Well when it comes to fans and non-fans of any fandom or no... If people would outcry about Wonder Woman's TV costume... I think people will rally on this.

Wow whoever wrote that article for did a really good job. I'm also glad they mentioned Cassie's model too. I hope Scholastic, if they decide to (*fingers crossed*), change Marco's model, I hope they also look into Cassie's. I know it's not as big of an issue, but it's still problematic.

Btw, thanks for sending an email to Scholastic. I really appreciate everyone who's been contacting Scholastic, making petitions, getting the word out. :)

Honestly though, that picture of Cassie is so low resolution and foggy around the details of her hair that I'm not even positive her hair was relaxed. And my main issue with if it was relaxed isn't a race thing, it's a "that's NOT Cassie" thing. Down-to-earth farm girls wouldn't do all that with their hair XD

It’s a pretty big demographic to be sacrificing when the Hispanic character is already the last kid to get a book cover in the series (the book featuring Marco is fifth in the series.)

I lol'd

Lol, that was my reaction too - until I remembered that Tobias and Ax get to narrate about half the number of books that the other four (jake, rachel, cassie, marco) do. So all in all, I'd say it's not all that unfair.

Chronologically, I think it made sense for Marco's book to come fifth. But if they're interested in marketing to that demographic of readers, the timing of when the book is released should also be taken into account.

Plotwise (not to pull in any spoilers to future readers) I *completely* agree with you- it really couldn't exactly have been earlier to fit the developement of his character/his reasons for fighting.
