[identity profile] rattyjol.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] animorphslj
I've created a petition for Scholastic to replace the awful cover model for Marco in the re-release. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lisacharly for help with the info.) The link is here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/marcomodel_animorphs/ and for those who haven't seen it yet the model is here: http://www.scholastic.com/animorphs/characters/Marco.htm

Tell your friends! Facebook, email, Twitter, even face-to-face (gasp)!

Hmm, I think the news and character tag will work for this? (Also, sorry I took a while to accept this post, I was skyping with my mum. But I've added you to the pre-approved list of users now, so you'll be able to make posts with links in them without worry now)

Now, here's the question. So I sign this with my real name or my online handle...(do they are about using online handles in these petitions? I have no idea.)

Lol, did you see the last post to this community? Goin' on 300 comments. Not all of them about Marco, but a lot.

I posted this link to [livejournal.com profile] racebending, where it might get some more exposure.

Can I suggest using the petition forms on change.org? http://www.change.org/start-a-petition

I mean, even though our little quibble with Marco's cover model doesn't really fit in with the, erm, loftier causes of poverty and political change featured on the site, don't worry because there ARE petitions for entertainment purposes, like this one for Alex Lambert from American Idol: http://www.change.org/petitions/bring_alex_lambert_back_on_american_idol#?opt_new=t&opt_fb=t (which I signed, ok?!) I mean, this IS about a loftier cause, like accurately representing minorities! It even has a nifty feature that lets you set goals with a little bar graph and everything! And embeddable widgetry with facebooky twittery things.

Thank you for creating this!

And I am so proud of our fandom right now.

I don't know if it can be edited but: maybe add that Marco is also the strategist of the group, intelligent, could be considered a role model, etc? Just so the non-Ani folks could know that he isn't just a funny sidekick.

....Rachel, Cassie and Jake are fine but Marco and Tobias are hideous. Just.... No.

Tobias looks a lot better in this picture - so, it's entirely possible that this one just happens to have a really bad angle or something.

Really? I think Rachel and Tobias are the most accurate models. Jake's blonde, Marco looks jewish, and Cassie is a little too fashionable.

I think the key thing for really getting Scholastic's attention will be pointing out how you won't support the re-release if they don't change the model. Gonna go sign up now.

Um, can you make a facebook group/event thing? It might spread faster that way, idk. Also, I really think you need to put something about "whitewashing" or race-changing in the title - that is the biggest problem here. We don't want to imply that we are bitter fans that don't like him looking different in general (think like if the Marco model had been used for Jake instead. We'd complain, probably, but it wouldn't be petition-worthy.)

Also, what does everyone think about tweeting Michael Grant about this? I'm thinking let's get a few more signatures first, but that might be a good way to expose it.

Also, something I wanted to mention in regards to Cassie: it's not petition-worthy or anything, but it's worth noting the change in her model too as approaching 'whitewashing' although that's not quite the right word. It's more like... making her fit in with idealized norms of society in ways that old Cassie didn't. She is (I think, it's genuinely hard to tell) taller and thinner, more fashionable, and has long, straight hair instead of short and curly or possibly cornrows (hard to tell) hair. This kind of idealizing and privileging of "white" hair is something that society likes to do a lot, and while it's not a problem for her to have that kind of hair per se, it's kind of a problem when changing it from old Cassie to new Cassie, because that's kind of the message that sends.

*nods* I agree about Cassie. That bothered me too. She seems too idealized by our society's standards of how girls should look: long hair, tall, thin, fashionable, etc.

Passing on a suggestion from someone I know - perhaps something to edit into the petition is a mention of the fact that Marco's model also doesn't reflect the character in any way? Just because we don't actually know whether the model does have any Hispanic background or not, and that this isn't about whether the actual model is "Hispanic enough", but about the fact that he doesn't match the actual character character as he's described - i.e. as having brown rather that paler skin.

Date: 2011-03-20 06:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] 1111-am.livejournal.com
Definitely a good point. We don't want to go so far as to become stereotypical of how Hispanics should look (or those who are half-Hispanic). It all goes back to our understanding of his character. *headdesk* I should have pointed that out more in my petition signature...

Logistical Questions

Date: 2011-03-20 08:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jedifreac.livejournal.com
Hi, I'm visiting from the [livejournal.com profile] racebending comm; I'm one of the mods. (Though, I have been a member of the [livejournal.com profile] animorphs comm for several years now and I am a HUGE Animorphs fan.)

I had a couple of logistical questions about this petition. The first one being, is there a "target" for this petition yet? Meaning, are there plans to get the petition to Scholastic or someone else in charge of the publication of the books? It is important to make sure that the right people see the petition in order for the changes you want to occur. Who will this petition be sent to, and how will they receive it?

Second, I wanted to note that because a broad umbrella of skin tones, hair colors, etc. fall under the Hispanic/Latino umbrella, it might be important to make that distinction in what you are advocating. There are blonde Hispanics and black Hispanics, so it would be important to articulate why having Marco depicted as having brown skin and darker features is important to fans.

If the organizers of this protest want, feel free to contact me at mlee@racebending.com and maybe we can coordinate something to get the word out?

We haven't talked much further than this petition because it was just put out now (and we just finished rewriting it), but that is a good point! It sounds like you have some experience from the Avatar petitioning and could give us pointers; that'd be great!

Either way, I think we'd need a few more signatures, (and idk, we might even want to try sending personal emails to Scholastic first) before sending them the petition.

This absolutely. We just had big discussion about this above, because we felt we weren't making this distinction appropriately, and were conflating Latino and Hispanic to boot. [livejournal.com profile] blue_rampion, [livejournal.com profile] rattyjol and I just finished rewriting the petition wording (I think anyway; [livejournal.com profile] rattyjol hasn't commented back yet.) The current, (final??) version is here (http://community.livejournal.com/animorphs/623304.html?thread=9262024#t9262024), tell us if you have any comments on it.

I never thought that covers from the 90s would be more PC and accurate, ever. The covers were so cheesy, and yet? They were accurate and better. That... seems backwards.

Just want to put my 2c in that when the petition is finalized/gains some traction around the fandom you should send the link to www.racialicious.com, because this is exactly the kind of thing that blog specializes in talking about (intersection of racial issues and pop culture).

It may be important to ask if references to Marco's ethnicity will be kept in the reprint, or if it will be cut. Given they are reediting the content, will references to Marco's ethnicity be cut?

Signed.

Marco is my favorite character. I would hate to see his character misrepresented :)

HEY - I'm not sure if you've been following the emails, but I've just got one final suggestion to make. In book 2 (page 11 of the first publication, page 17 of the reprints), Rachel describes Marco as having “a dark complexion”. I think should replace "medium brown skin" with this quote, since it's much more accurate.
