Universal is developing an Animorphs movie and is looking for a director, apparently.

I have so many mixed feelings, but mostly I'm keeping expectations extremely low... I feel like it'd be extremely difficult to get things right and extremely easy to mess things up, but maybe we'll get some nice special effects at least... I dunno! It's interesting that someone involved with the TV series is on board, but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing, haha. XD

Thoughts?

FYI, if you have Netflix, seasons 1 and 2 of the Animorphs TV show are now available via Netflix streaming. There are a few complaints that small portions are cut, so keep that in mind, but if that's an ongoing issue I imagine it will be fixed soon enough.

And now I know what I'll be up to this Independence Day weekend...

Sorry I didn't get this notice up here earlier (life has been hectic), but for those in the DC area or who are willing to make a day-trip, Katherine Applegate will be speaking and signing books at this year's National Book Festival on the National Mall on Saturday, September 21 (her husband came to this event last year)! Here are the deets:

Presentation in the Children Pavillion: 11:20 am - 11:50 am

Book Signing: 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
(sadly the Children Pavillion is on the opposite end on the Mall from the presentation)

More info about the festival here.

Anyone from here planning on coming? I will be there, trying to negotiate line placeholding, lol (effing Festival scheduling Margaret Atwood at the same time!). I was so disappointed it was just Michael Grant there last year, but now I can get the second signature on the same books! ;)

From Hirac Delest:

"In other news: An amusing article has popped up on The Buzz where a new Mississippi bill has been introduced that forbids human-animal hybrids, such as the Animorphs. The HB 819 is The Protection of the Human Person Act, and would have slapped the Animorphs with a fine should they have ever gone public in our time."

Guys the Yeerks must be in goverment! They're banning the Animorphs!

There's been some recent news come to light revealing that Sony Pictures actually owns several Animorphs domain names - including animorphs.net, animorphsmovie.com, animorphs-movie.com, and animorphs-movie.net. But apparently, these were bought just before the announcement of the re-release, and are due to expire on June 19th, 2013 - which means that this isn't necessarily as good of a sign as all this sounds. Chances are, the re-release was partially a way of gaging interest, and the recent cancellation isn't a good sign.

There's more details about this at Hirac Delest, where all of this has been revealed - you can read more about it here and here.

But as Issam notes (and since I'm pretty sure we all live in hope here), it might be possible for fans to build a campaign to try and convince Scolastic/Sony that a movie would be profitable.

So: what's everyone's thoughts on this, and would anyone have any ideas on what could convince these companies to consider making a movie?

Looks like the cancellation is now official. There had also been earlier an Hirac Delest post about an email from one of the editors that had also made the cancellation sound pretty certain, but now it's definite. ):

So I just noticed that Michael Grant is going to be at the National Book Festival in Washington, DC on September 23! His presentation is 1:50 pm - 2:35 pm, and his signing is unfortunately right afterwards at 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm (usually you have to line up a bit in advance to get a good place in line/even get a signature before time is up)...any other Washingtonians on here thinking of seeing him then? Impromptu DC Animorphs meet-up?

Guys, this is a short, quick post with some sad rumours: according to Hirac Delest, there's a chance the re-launch will be cancelled :(

We need to start sending messages (on twitter and fcebook at least) to Scholastic to show them there are a lot of fans interested in the re-release!

I created this facebook page. If anyone has more ideas, please share them!

Thought I'd let everyone know that I got a chance to do a Q&A with the relaunch Rachel cover model. You can read it here: http://www.hiracdelest.com/blog/?p=3869

Hirac Delest's just confirmed that books 7 & 8 are going to be rereleased, guys!

THIS MEANS WE GET AX!

(Alas, no news of any changes on the Marco model yet though...actually, also no news of Megamorphs 1 as well. Wasn't that one originally published inbetween 7 and 8?)

[livejournal.com profile] a_happy_book and anyone else who might happen to be in Australia, I have news! I went into a bookstore today and asked when the books are coming to Australian stores, and it turns out the answer is...August. Which sucks.

But not all is lost - it turns out they can ship out the books from the US, and you don't have to pay extra for shipping! Or at least, you can at Dymocks. I'm not sure about other bookstores, but I imagine they'd be able to do the same. I ordered the books from them myself, and they said they should arrive in the next few weeks. Soooooo we shouldn't have to go and wait until August or pay to get them shipped over the Pacific Ocean, at least :P

Hi, all! Long time lurker, first time poster. However, I just wanted to mention that I was at my local Waldenbooks last night, and they already have the first two books in stock! I almost bought them on impulse, but I decided I should maybe save my money.

Who am I kidding? I'm going to go pick them up after work!

Anyway, thought you all would like to know!

Looks like they're able to ship them out early! Yay! :)

Edit Thursday, April 21 at 4:10 PM PDT: They just shipped! :)

OKAY SO. A little bit more from Michael Grant, who twittered to me.

MG: Plz pass along to all that we share blame for Marco issue. We did receive pix. We r never quite sure whether art is
MG: in final form when we see it. But honestly on this we just spaced out. Glanced, focused on the morph and missed it.
MG: We share blame. Should have clicked and didn't. Thanks to Anifans for catching our screwup. Love u guys for keeping us in line

Also, put up another page of my Animorphs #5 comic! And it's a Peter and Marco page, so I had a blast drawing it. I feel like I do better with the talky, melancholy scenes than I do with action sequences, probably because my handle on human anatomy is tenuous on a good day. Comments appreciated!

Guys, I've gotten a response back from Scholastic and it's great news!

Thank you again for getting in touch with us about the Marco model for the cover of Animorphs #5: The Predator. We always appreciate hearing from Animorphs fans, and we want you to know that we have heard and share your concerns. We will, in fact, be using a different model for the actual books from the one that currently appears in our catalog and on the Animorphs web site. The first Marco book won’t be published until December 2011, so there is plenty of time to make sure we have a model who truly represents the description of the character in the books. (Please note that the website will be corrected as soon as the new photo shoot has been completed and the morph animation can be redone; in the meantime, the placeholder Marco will remain.)

While getting a new model was something we were already planning to do, we truly appreciate you advocacy on behalf of Marco. The support and passion of the Animorphs fan community has always been a crucial part of the success of the series, and we certainly want to be responsive when concerns arise.

Personally, I'd like to say a very big thank you to Scholastic for listening to our concerns and taking them into consideration, and for promising to find him a model that truly represents him. It definitely means a lot.

For those who are interested, racebending.com recently posted an article on the whitewashing of Marco's model in the new series, where they talk about the impact of the casting and quote a few of the responses to the recent petition.

I also sent an email to Scholastic about this recently - I have received a response, and while they haven't said whether they will be making any changes yet, they have said that they will look into it and give me a more detailed response later. Hopefully a good sign! (And if anyone else does want to contact Scholastic, please PM for details on how to do that)
[identity profile] lisacharly.livejournal.com
Okay, for those of you who follow Michael Grant's twitter, this conversation just went down.

HPC = HotPinkCoffee/[livejournal.com profile] lisacharly

HPC: MG has someone contacted you about the whitewashing of the models for the Animorphs rerelease? There's movement in Ani fandom over it
HPC: petitions and letters to scholastic and all
MG: I haven't heard anything about this. We haven't seen a Cassie cover yet. Do you have a link?
MG: I just saw. Marco does look a wee bit anglo, doesn't he? Sigh. They don't really clear stuff with us. They barely talk to us.
HPC: Fans have a petition going here (linked) and sending emails to Mr/Mrs Van Stratten
MG: Who is Van Stratten?
HPC: Levithan and Sinek. Editors of mkting, publishing and in charge of rerelease IIRC
HPC: If you know any other avenues we could explore it'd be much appreciated. Either way good luck with the rerelease. :)
MG: I see it now. Don't know him/her. KA is out of town will discuss when she gets home. We do NOT approva (sic) of whitewashing
MG: But to be honest they may have showed us &we may not have clicked. Don't think so. But maybe. Honestly we're buried in work
MG: Related example: on GONE I have acharacter described as overweight. Cover model not so much. Let me talk to KA. Tweet me again.
HPC: Will do, thanks for communicating with the fans regarding this
MG: We love the anifans. When Scholastic didn't care, you guys still did. We don't forget that. Good night.

So basically, MG and KA don't approve of whitewashing and see our issues with the new model for Marco, and also they still love us. It's sad to see that they don't have much input with the marketing, but it's nice to see that they continue to communicate with fans. Quite encouraging, overall!

As of last count, the petition has 119 signatures.

I've created a petition for Scholastic to replace the awful cover model for Marco in the re-release. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lisacharly for help with the info.) The link is here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/marcomodel_animorphs/ and for those who haven't seen it yet the model is here: http://www.scholastic.com/animorphs/characters/Marco.htm

Tell your friends! Facebook, email, Twitter, even face-to-face (gasp)!
